About the book
The response to the Call for Chapters was very good: a total of 23 chapters was submitted, of which 16 were selected for publicaton after the review process (we thank all contributors and reviewers for their efforts). The book is organized into 5 parts:
- Applications in Remote Sensing
- Applications in Image Retrieval
- Applications in Image Analysis
- Other Applications
- Theoretical Contributions
There is an official Springer website of the book (where you can also order a copy). For your information, the table of contents can be viewed here.
About the series "Studies Fuzziness and Soft Computing"
The series "Studies in Fuzziness and Soft Computing" contains publications on various areas within so-called soft computing which include fuzzy sets, rough sets, neural networks, evolutionary computations, probabilistic and evidential reasoning, multi-valued logic, and related fields. The publications within "Studies in Fuzziness and Soft Computing" are primarily monographs and edited volumes. They cover significant recent developments in the field, both of a foundational and applicable character.
The editors of this volume have already edited two other volumes in the series. It concerns volume 52 (Fuzzy Techniques in Image Processing) and volume 122 (Fuzzy Filters for Image Processing).
You can visit the website of the series here. The series editor is Prof. Janusz Kacprzyk (his picture is below).

Vision in general and images in particular have always played an important and essential role in human life. In the past they were, today they are, and in the future they will continue to be one of our most important information carriers. Nowadays, the field of image processing also has numerous commercial, scientific, industrial and military applications. All these applications result from the interaction between fundamental scientific research on the one hand, and the development of new and high-standard technology on the other hand.
In order to cope with the variety of image processing challenges, several techniques have been introduced and developed, quite often with great success. Among the different techniques that are currently in use, we also encounter soft computing techniques. Soft Computing is an emerging field that consists of complementary elements of fuzzy logic, neural computing, evolutionary computation, machine learning and probabilistic reasoning.
The book "Soft Computing in Image Processing: Recent Advances" aims at providing a collection of recent and state-of-the-art contributions on this exciting topic.
Topics include, but are not limited to, soft computing in/for:
- Image quality improvement: filtering, noise removal, enhancement, restoration, ...
- Image analysis: edge detection, segmentation, pattern recognition, object recognition, interpretation, ...
- Image compression and image reconstruction
- Image similarity
- Computer Vision
- Satellite image processing
- Medical image processing
- Mathematical morphology
- Wavelets
- ...
All submitted chapters will be reviewed by at least two referees.

Now: authors who are interested in contributing a chapter for the book are kindly asked to send a short email to SCIP@ugent.be, containing a preliminary title and a short abstract of their chapter. This will facilitate the planning of the review process.
-
By October 15, 2005: submission of chapters.
-
By November 30, 2005: notification of acceptance (extended to December 15).
-
By January 15, 2006: submission of final chapters (extended to February 1).
-
Second half of 2006: publication of the book "Soft Computing in Image Processing: Recent Advances".
Archive: Submission guidelines
Below are the guidelines for preparing chapters. Please read them carefully, since it is required that every author follows these guidelines in order to ensure an efficient publication process. If you have any questions regarding these guidelines, do not hesitate to contact us.
-
Chapters should be prepared in English.
-
The preferred length of each manuscript is about 30 pages.
-
The manuscripts should be prepared using TeX.
-
The manuscripts should be prepared using the publisher's templates and style files. It concerns the following files (click on the name to download the file):
- author.tex: this is the basic TeX-file for preparing your chapter. It also includes guidelines on how to include references ; there are specific rules for monographs, edited volumes, journal papers, and theses.
- figure.eps: this is a figure that is included in the author.tex-file.
- svmult.cls: this is a style file.
- svmult.cls: this is a style file.
- svind.ist: this is a sytle file.
These files have to be copied in the same directory as the one you will prepare the manuscript in. Just to show how each chapter will look like, you can download the corresponding output file as well: author.pdf.
-
Important note for authors: at the end of the book we will include an "index page", containing hundreds of index words that appear throughout the book. This is quite convenient for the readers, since it allows them to easily find topics of their interest. Please indicate the words in your chapter that you wish to be indexed! You can do this by including the command "\index{YourWord}" throughout your chapter. An example is given in the auhtor.tex file.
